The ocean is key to life on earth.

  • It provides livelihoods to approximately 3 billion people

  • The global value of marine resources is estimated at $3 trillion per year, and

  • It absorbs approximately 25 percent of global carbon emissions.

However, unsustainable practices are resulting in ocean pollution, habitat degradation, and rising ocean temperatures. This is putting ocean resources, and our futures, at risk. Each year

  • Approximately 11 million tons of plastic end up in the ocean¹

  • Over 10 million tons of fish are wasted annually¹ and

  • Rising sea levels threaten 680 million people in low-lying coastal regions. ¹

Resilient, Sustainable Equitable development across social, economic and environmental pillars is paramount.

The SARDE team have experience working with NGOs and government actors in this space, undertaking blue economy research and providing strategic guidance. We take a holistic approach, considering social, environmental and economic implications across blue economy sectors, and the relationship between blue economy sectors and the wider operational environment (e.g., waste, education, land-use), which can support or undermine progress.

The services we offer comprise:

  • Blue Economy research, including national and local baseline research across blue economy sectors

  • Strategic roadmaps and action planning support

  • Climate mitigation and adaptation support to plans and sectors

  • Institutional capacity building, knowledge pieces and training for blue economy stakeholders.

Please see the contact page to discuss how SARDE can support you in this space.
