Affordable, sustainable housing is one of the major global challenges. UN estimates suggest that the number of people needing access to adequate housing will reach approximately 3 billion by 2030. To meet this need, an estimated 96,000 new affordable homes need to be constructed every day.¹ Moreover, the World Green Building Council calculate that approximately 40% of global emissions come from the construction and operation of buildings.² It is therefore imperative that housing solutions are both affordable and sustainable.

SARDE consultants have experience providing technical support to development actors and private sector stakeholders in the quest for affordable and sustainable housing. This includes assessment tools and guidance focused on the social and environmental sustainability of housing projects, and research and policy advice on resilient and sustainable housing in different contexts.

Research, policy and technical advice and assessment support addresses themes such as:

  • Resilient housing plans in the face of growing climate risks

  • Climate mitigation, circular economy and environmental stewardship.

  • Affordability and social sustainability of housing and interaction of developments with the wider community
